Pulmonary Effects of Aspirated Thickener – Live Journal Club

Presented by: Hillary Cooper, MA CCC-SLP  and Jessica Lasky, MS, CCC-SLP

March 9, 2022

8:30 PM EST / 7:30 PM CST / 6:30 PM MST / 5:30 PM PST

Trigger Warning: The research articles about to be discussed use animals as test subjects and involve euthanasia/post-mortem assessments. The MedSLP Collective does not promote research that results in the harm or death of animals or any living organism, however, given the nature of this research topic (i.e. pulmonary health and effects of aspiration without comorbid factors), the ethical standards and guidelines on invasive studies, and laws protecting children, adults, and the elderly from harm, existing studies are currently only limited to animal subjects. It should be noted that strict guidelines exist to ensure methods of experimentation are as humane as possible.

After this course, you will be able to…

  • Participants will identify varying types of thickeners on the market to utilize for their patient populations
  • Participants will discuss the pros and cons of thickened liquid use for the pulmonarily compromised patient,
  • Participants will demonstrate knowledge of pulmonary effects of aspirated thickened liquids.

Agenda:

  • Minutes 0-5: Introduction of the topic, articles being covered, and presenters,
  • Minutes 5-15: An overview of thickened liquids as it relates to the medical speech-language pathologist (SLP)
  • Minutes 15-58: Educational dialogue regarding thickened liquids and the clinical implications for the SLP along with Q+A
