Introduction:

Speech-language pathologists are moving towards using standard protocols for videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS), most notably the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Protocol (MBSImP), which requires AP view as a standard component (Martin-Harris, et al., 2008). A staple component of standard VFSS protocols is obtaining anteroposterior (AP) views of the patient. This allows us to visualize and assess glottal closure, symmetry of pharyngeal contraction and bolus transit, lateralization of pharyngeal residue, and provides us with an appropriate view of the esophagus (Gates, Hartnell, & Graminga, 2006).
