Every year, changes to the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) Manual are drafted, debated, discussed, and
deliberated on by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Changes to the Minimum Data Set (MDS) greatly impact Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) financially and dictate what assessments need to be completed, the content of each, and how to complete them. Lack of knowledge and communication regarding these changes can mean big headaches for SNFs come Oct. 1st.
As Speech-Language Pathologists working in SNFs, we need a baseline understanding of the RAI and MDS process and where and how we can make a financial impact. This resource outlines the 2023 Changes that may impact SLPs within SNFs.
About 60 changes were made to the RAI manual since the draft was first released in April 2023. The changes
represent some of the largest edits to the MDS nursing home assessment tool and reimbursement structure since PDPM was rolled out. CMS provides a great “change” document and indicates any revisions in red font.
