What Started It All…
When I transitioned to the med SLP world, I could barely keep my head above the water.
It took hours of shadowing another SLP after working a full day, months of webinars and conferences, cringe-worthy mistakes, and dozens of sleepless nights worrying whether or not I caused a patient’s pneumonia.
I knew I never wanted anyone else to experience the stress, anxiety, and sleep-disrupting fears that I had experienced while navigating the med SLP world alone.
Each time someone with dysphagia returned to the facility with a new pneumonia, my stomach churned.
When stroke survivors suddenly needed more oxygen or developed a cough after I started them on a diet, I would panic.
Patients with tracheostomies or laryngectomies felt infinitely more fragile to me.
I recognized that I could be causing more harm than good.
I also recognized that few physicians seemed to understand what med SLPs are capable of.
It didn’t help that I didn’t have all of the knowledge or resources.
Their respect for our department was lacking.
I knew something had to change.
That’s why I created the MedSLP Collective.
The MedSLP Collective is a community of dedicated SLPs who want to do better.
We want to revolutionize the way current and future med SLPs gain their knowledge, provide better practice, and grab a seat at the table with the rest of the medical team.
Because we are on a mission to build better paths for med SLPs.
Because we deserve better.
