Introduction:

There are several gray areas in our field, with one of them being what SLPs should know about when it comes to Disorders of Consciousness (DOC).

Consciousness requires both arousal and awareness and is diagnosed across four different levels: Coma, Vegetative State, Minimally Conscious State, and Emergence from Minimally Conscious State.

What does all of that mean? What's the prognosis, and what should SLPs understand?

This week's resource, contributed by the brilliant Rebecca Flowers, provides an introduction to all of that! Download this document to gain a better understanding of this population, considerations for approaching patients and their families, prognosis, and considerations relevant to our scope.
