Research to Practice: Caregiver Coaching for Pediatric Feeding Disorder

Med SLP: Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, speech-language pathologist in Columbia, SC, adjunct professor with University of South Carolina, is the acclaimed host of “First Bite: Fed, Fun, Functional” a weekly Speech Therapy Podcast that addresses “all thangs” Pediatric Speech Therapy, and is presented by Speechtherapypd.com. Recently, Michelle authored, “Chasing the Swallow: Truth, Science, and Hope for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders”. She is an accomplished lecturer; traveling across the nation delivering courses on best practices for evaluation and treatment of the medically complex infant, toddler, and child with respect to their pediatric oropharyngeal dysphagia, pediatric feeding disorder, as well as language acquisition within the framework of Early Intervention. She has served as the Treasurer for the Council of State Association Presidents, is a Past President of the South Carolina Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (SCSHA), a 2017 graduate of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Leadership Development Program, a 2020 recipient of the Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Champion from Feeding Matters, a 2021 recipient of the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Clinical Achievement from the South Carolina Speech, Language, and Hearing Association, and eight-time recipient of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s ACE Award for continuing education.

Pediatrician: Tessa Gonzalez, MD FAAP is a general pediatrician in Columbia, SC.  Dr. Gonzalez graduated from Harvard College with a degree in anthropology and completed medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. Gonzalez completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of South Carolina/Prisma Health Children's Hospital and subsequently worked as a general pediatrician at both a Federally Qualified Health Center and in private practice. Currently, Dr. Gonzalez practices primarily in the newborn nursery and is also the medical director of a non-profit pediatric therapy clinic/preschool for children with disabilities. Dr. Gonzalez has served in various roles for Feeding Matters including family coach, lead family panelist, and committee member for the Pre-Conference program of the International PFD Conference.  Dr. Gonzalez is the proud mom of two children, one of whom has multiple disabilities and medical issues including Pediatric Feeding Disorder.  Dr. Gonzalez believes everyone deserves competent, compassionate, patient-centered care and is proud to use her personal and professional expertise to empower families and professionals to be the best advocates they can be.

Med SLP: Autumn R. Henning, MS, CCC-SLP, COM , IBCLC is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). She is a Certified Orofacial Myologist through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). She is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Master’s Degree in Communication Disorders. Autumn R. Henning, MS, CCC-SLP, COM , IBCLC is currently appointed and in good standing as an Assistant Professor within the voluntary faculty series in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences. She was a Founding Board Member for the International Consortium for Oral Ankylofrenula Professionals (ICAP).  Autumn is the owner of Chrysalis Orofacial in Greenville, SC. It is the first and only clinic of its kind in the region. Autumn specializes in orofacial function and development throughout the lifespan. She works with infants to adults at her private practice.

Dentist: Ann Bynum, DDS is originally from Ocala, Florida. She did her undergraduate training at Florida State University. She then attended dental school at the University of Iowa, where she met her husband, Dr. Matt Bynum. She did two further years of training in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Ann Bynum moved to Greenville, South Carolina in 1997 and opened her practice in Simpsonville. She has three children of her own (all boys!!) and understands and appreciates the arts of pediatric dentistry and parenting! Although she had used lasers for much of her dental career, in 2013 she began her journey to learn about TOTs and how best to treat them. Her goal is to correct sleeping, feeding, and airway issues in her patients before they become bigger issues headed into adulthood. She has been helping families in the Upstate of South Carolina and surrounding areas for over 8 years with the help of a wonderful supportive team of SLPs, IBCLCs, OTs, PTs, COMs and DCs. Dr. Bynum is a Diplomat of the ABPD, a member of the SSPD, the AAPD, ASAP, and the ADA. She has lectured and written numerous articles on customer service, marketing, leadership, teamwork and most recently tethered ties, sleep and airway. She enjoys spending time with her husband and their three boys, Matthew, Luke, and John. She enjoys working ON her practice and traveling.

The Power of Two: Collaboration of Neonatology and Speech Pathology
to Maximize Neonates Transition to Home

Med SLP: Raquel Garcia, SLPD, CCC-SLP,CLC,CNT, BCS-S is a trained craniofacial speech-language pathologist who is a core member of the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Craniofacial team. She works in the acute care setting in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit . She graduated with her M.S. in communication disorders from Nova Southeastern University and her doctorate of speech-language pathology from Northwestern University. Her clinical interests include upper airway disorders, infant feeding, neonatal care, and dysphagia.

Neonatologist: Dr. Daphne Barbeau, MD is a neonatal intensive care physician working in Davie Florida.  She is the Director of Neonatal Neurodevelopment at Envision Health and HCA University Hospital.  Her professional passions include infant neurodevelopment prenatal counseling, palliative care, trauma informed care and family integrated care.  Dr. Barbeau is currently creating books for families of NICU infants as well as working with the AAP TeCAN team to promote interventions that target maternal and family mental health.  Dr. Barbeau was raised in Palm Harbor Florida and completed her Medical, Pediatric and Neonatal training at the University of Florida where she was also chief resident.

It Takes Two to Tango: Interprofessional Collaboration in the NICU

Med SLP: Ramya Kumar, MS.CCC-SLP, BCSS, CNT, IBCLC, NTMTC is an ASHA certified Speech Language Pathologist specializing in infant and pediatric feeding disorders while practicing in a Level 3 NICU in Phoenix, AZ. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders, Certified Neonatal Therapist, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Small Baby Care Specialist, Neonatal Touch & Massage Certified Therapist, NANN Developmental Care Specialist & has completed the Trauma Informed Professional Certificate. Ramya is an internationally sought out speaker & clinical mentor on the topic of neuroprotective care in the NICU & pediatric feeding disorders. She is passionate about helping families create mealtime success through a whole-body lens. More recently, Ramya has been serving as a NICU Developmental Coordinator championing changes in unit culture, system-wide policy development and supporting transition of NICU families to community based programs. Neonatal Nurse Practitioner: Amanda Mascio NNP-BC, MS, RNC has been in the Neonatal ICU for the past 20 years. She was a bedside RN for 8 years before deciding to further her education. She now practices as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and has been doing so for the past 10 years. She has been the lead nurse practitioner at a local level 3 NICU. She has experienced caring for and managing infants from 22 weeks to term with a wide range of diagnoses.

Interprofessional Practice in the Neonatal ICU: Management of Dysphagia with a Team Approach

Med SLP: Jenny Reynolds M.S. CCC-SLP, CLC, CNT is a speech-language pathologist practicing as an advanced clinical specialist in a level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Jenny is a board-certified swallowing specialist with a focus in pediatric dysphagia. She is a certified lactation counselor and a certified neonatal therapist. Jenny is currently pursuing her small baby certification. She recently co-chaired a quality initiative to create new oral feeding guidelines with a multidisciplinary feeding workgroup in the NICU. Jenny’s research interest is infant dysphagia and FEES. She is a co-investigator on several studies in the NICU including: FEES, Born Early Reading Program in the NICU, and Parent confidence and competence with feeding. Her team created an international Neonatal and Infant FEES Course that is offered annually. Jenny and her team has disseminated the NICU FEES research at many conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Jenny is currently pursuing her PhD in health studies at Texas Woman’s University. She serves on the American Speech Hearing Association Convention programming committee for the pediatric dysphagia strand, the Texas Speech Hearing Association Convention Career Development/Philanthropy Chair, and the National Association of Neonatal Therapy professional collaborative. Jenny is a mentor for the Ignite program for the National Association of Neonatal Therapy. Jenny is currently an adjunct lecturer at several local universities in the DFW area for their speech therapy graduate programs.

The Impact of Cardiac Surgery on Feeding Development

Med SLP: Hema Desai, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLE, NTMTC is an inpatient speech pathologist at Children’s Health of Orange County (CHOC), working with infants and children with feeding and swallowing disorders. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at Boston University and Master of Science degree at Emerson College. She has a board certification specialty in swallowing and swallowing disorders (BCS-S) and neonatal touch and massage and is a clinical lactation educator. Hema is a clinical supervisor to graduate students at CHOC, as well as a therapist on the Multidisciplinary Intensive Feeding Program. She has presented at several ASHA conventions and California state conferences, as well as co-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored a book chapter. Her professional interests are primarily in pediatric feeding and dysphagia, as well as working with infants with congenital heart defects. She is an active member of CNOC (Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Collaborative), a special interest group focusing on research and education on feeding and swallowing challenges in children with congenital heart defects.

Pediatric cardiologist: Dr. Joanne Starr is a congenital heart surgeon with over 20 years of experience in performing correction of congenital heart defects in neonates, infants, children and young adults born with congenital heart defect. In addition, her experience includes postoperative care of these patients along with a multidisciplinary team of specialists including feeding team experts. Special interests include neurodevelopmental outcomes in patients who undergo surgery in the neonatal period.
