Introduction:
Cancer and cancer treatments can lead to changes in a person’s cognition and communication skills. In layperson’s terms, this is often referred to as chemo brain, although the medical community utilizes the term cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) to describe the syndrome. Cancer-related cognitive impairment has been found to significantly impact a person’s quality of life. It is highly prevalent, with it impacting up to 30% of cancer patients before chemotherapy and up to 75% during their treatment (Janelsins et al., 2013; Palmer, 2022). As these signs are often subtle, they can go undetected by a person’s oncology team (Palmer, 2022). Speechlanguage pathologists have a role in the identification and treatment of CRCI.
